Summer is just around the corner, which means it is nearly time to jump in the pool. But wait! I have done hardly anything for maintenance for the whole of winter. This is going to take forever you say.
Good news, if you have done the basic minimum for your pool over winter the process of opening your pool for summer is super simple.
Make sure you have increased your pool filter and chlorinator run time to allow for extra usage and an increase in temperature.
Check the expiration date on the pool chemicals and discard those that are past the expiration date. Remember to store chemicals in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place and NOT be above eye level.
Inspect the pool, pump, filter and chlorinator for leaks, cracks and breaks and any fraying on the electrical cables. Ensure your chlorinator cell is clean and free from calcium buildup.
Check the pressure gauge on your pool filter.
Make sure you fill the swimming pool until the pool water is halfway up the skimmer weir.
Clean and vacuum any debris from the pool.
Test your swimming pool water for pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, free chlorine, and metals. Add any chemicals such as algaecide or pool shock if necessary.
Remember to wait at least 24 hours before swimming.
